In a twist that has fans buzzing, Marvel Comics has revealed that the new Thunderbolts team is, in fact, a reimagined version of the New Avengers. What was initially teased as New Thunderbolts is now confirmed as the latest iteration of the Avengers offshoot team.
This new series, set to launch on June 11, 2025, sees Bucky Barnes—now adopting the name Revolution—recruiting some of Marvel’s most dangerous loners and antiheroes to take on a new and terrifying threat.
Written by Sam Humphries and illustrated by Ton Lima, the ongoing series introduces an ensemble cast that includes Black Widow, Wolverine (Laura Kinney), Eddie Brock as Carnage, the Hulk, Clea Strange, and Namor. Their mission? To take down the “Killuminati,” evil clones of the world’s most brilliant minds, and usher in a revolutionary new era for Earth’s Mightiest Heroes.
Humphries expressed excitement about continuing the tradition of explosive team dynamics in the New Avengers saga. “It’s a thrill and an honor to continue the grand New Avengers tradition,” he said in a Marvel press release.
This marks the first new New Avengers team since 2016, when Sunspot led a team that was initially part of the Avengers Idea Mechanics (AIM) and later became the U.S. Avengers.
As the series progresses, the New Avengers will grow in number, with future issues hinting at even more dramatic confrontations with the newly surfaced “Killuminati.” The first issue of New Avengers is scheduled to release on June 11, 2025.
The rebranding of Thunderbolts into New Avengers is a nod to Marvel’s ability to adapt and align its comics with the larger cinematic universe, while continuing to offer fresh and exciting storylines to its fans.
