The creators of Stranger Things are facing renewed backlash after a behind‑the‑scenes documentary revealed major production issues during the show’s final season.
The film, titled One Last Adventure: The Making of Stranger Things 5, was released on Netflix this week. It offers a two‑hour look at the production of the series’ final chapter, which concluded on New Year’s Eve 2025.
In the documentary, creators Matt and Ross Duffer make a striking admission. Matt Duffer says they began production on the finale without a finished script, calling the process unusually rushed.
One crew member described the situation as “laying down the tracks as the train is going.” According to several interviews, sets and visual effects for the final episode were created based largely on discussions, not completed scripts.
The documentary also reveals that shooting for the final episode began before the script was fully written. This was due to tight scheduling for important outdoor scenes that required summer lighting.

A production assistant is quoted saying, “We don’t even fully know what’s going on,” highlighting confusion among crew members working on the finale.
Fans have seized on these details as an explanation for issues they saw in the ending. One viewer wrote online that it was not surprising the finale turned out the way it did given the circumstances.
Others questioned Netflix’s decision to release the documentary at all. Some viewers asked why the platform would highlight a production process that appeared disorganized and stressful.
Not everyone agrees the Duffers deserve criticism. Several fans and industry observers noted that incomplete scripts during filming are more common than viewers realize, especially on large productions.
Still, the documentary shows the heavy strain placed on cast and crew. For many fans, it offers a clearer understanding of why the Stranger Things finale proved so divisive.
One Last Adventure: The Making of Stranger Things 5 is now streaming on Netflix.
