Modern smartphones are powerful, but many users still struggle with battery life. A recent study by the U.K. telecom company Elevate shows that some of the most popular apps are also the biggest battery drainers. Here are the top five apps you should watch out for:
1. Netflix
- Consumes 1,500% of a full battery per month.
- Average of 60 hours of viewing plus 13 hours of background processes.
- Background activity continues even when the app is closed.
2. TikTok
- Drains 825% of a full battery per month.
- 33 hours of usage plus 10 hours of background processes.
- Background tasks continue after closing the app.
3. YouTube
- Uses 540% of a full battery per month.
- About 20% of battery per hour of viewing.
- Background processes run 6–7 hours per month.
4. Threads
- Consumes 460% of a full battery per month.
- Background activity averages 6.9 hours per month.
- A new social media app from Meta with features similar to X (formerly Twitter).
5. Snapchat
- Drains 320% of a full battery per month.
- Background processes account for about half of total battery usage.
- Average 16 hours of usage per month.
The study measured battery usage by analyzing screen time, background activity, and overall energy consumption. If you want to extend your phone’s battery life, consider limiting time spent on these apps or managing their background processes.
