The TikTok Ban Could Be Just the Start of a Bigger Tech Battle

A new partnership between DeepSeek and Huawei is shaking up the ongoing U.S.-China tech war. The collaboration, which focuses on AI technology, is pushing China closer to becoming independent in AI development.

Huawei’s cloud unit is now powering DeepSeek’s AI models, raising concerns in Washington about China’s growing influence in global technology.

Although this move doesn’t directly affect U.S. citizens for now, it adds another layer of complexity to the global tech race. For TikTok, this development is particularly significant. The app’s future in the U.S. is uncertain, with the possibility of a ban still on the table.

The ban is partly due to data privacy concerns, especially around Chinese-owned platforms. DeepSeek has admitted to many of the same data concerns that TikTok faced, which could make U.S. lawmakers worry even more about data security.

As TikTok’s fate hangs in the balance, DeepSeek’s technology is becoming more prominent worldwide, thanks to partnerships with companies like Microsoft and Amazon. Despite TikTok’s struggles, no one is pressuring U.S. companies to stop working with DeepSeek, raising questions about why some tech companies face bans while others do not.

The U.S. has already started enforcing restrictions on TikTok, blocking new installs and updates from app stores. However, the legal battles are ongoing, and the situation is changing quickly. With rising concerns over AI and data privacy, the political landscape surrounding tech bans is becoming more complicated.

The irony is clear. While China continues to grow its own AI industry through companies like DeepSeek, TikTok—owned by ByteDance—is still under scrutiny. As the U.S. works to limit China’s access to advanced technology, China is focusing on reducing its reliance on foreign chips.

With President Trump back in office, the tech war is expected to heat up even further. His first term set the stage for a high-stakes battle over technology, and the second term could bring even more uncertainty to the global tech scene.
