Sydney Sweeney will play legendary boxer Christy Martin in the upcoming biographical sports drama Christy, set to premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) in September 2025.
Directed by David Michôd and co-written with Mirrah Foulkes, the film tells the story of Christy Martin’s rise as a pioneering figure in women’s boxing. Martin was the first female boxer signed by promoter Don King and the first woman featured on the cover of Sports Illustrated.
To portray Martin authentically, Sweeney underwent a major physical transformation, gaining over 30 pounds and increasing her jeans size by four. Her training included daily weightlifting and kickboxing, which helped her capture Martin’s athleticism.
The film features Merritt Wever, Katy O’Brian, and Ethan Embry in supporting roles. TIFF will host the world premiere of Christy during its 50th edition, running from September 4 to 14, 2025.
Early buzz highlights Sweeney’s dedication and the film’s potential to be a standout sports drama.
