A recent survey shows strong interest among U.S. iPhone owners in upgrading to Apple’s new iPhone 17 series.
SellCell surveyed over 2,000 iPhone users in August 2025 and found that 68.3% plan to buy an iPhone 17 model, up from 61.9% ahead of the iPhone 16 launch in 2024.
The survey revealed that the iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max are expected to be the most popular, chosen by 38.1% of respondents. The standard iPhone 17 accounted for 16.7%, while 13.5% plan to buy the iPhone 17 Air. Only 3.3% said they are waiting for a foldable iPhone.
Battery life is the top reason for upgrading, cited by 53% of respondents. Other factors include new designs and features (36.2%), display improvements (34.3%), camera upgrades (28.1%), and AI or software enhancements (7.1%).
Price remains the main reason for not upgrading, with 68.9% saying cost is a barrier. Satisfaction with current devices also plays a role, with 71.7% reporting they are happy with their iPhone.
Foldable phones from Samsung and Google pose a potential threat. About 20.1% said they would consider switching to Samsung and 10.2% to Google if Apple does not release a foldable iPhone by 2026. Despite this, brand loyalty remains high, with nearly 70% planning to stay with Apple.
The iPhone 17 series is expected to be officially announced on September 9, 2025.
