Star Wars Is Saying Goodbye to Andor With Season 2 – Here’s Why

Published on

Andor, one of the most acclaimed Star Wars shows, will conclude with Season 2, despite initial plans for a much longer run.

Season 1’s overwhelming success sparked confusion among fans as to why the show was being shortened, but several key factors—ranging from actor commitments to exorbitant production costs—explain the decision.

From Five Seasons to Two

Initially, Andor was conceived as a five-season project. However, multiple changes behind the scenes, including Diego Luna’s commitment and escalating production costs, led to the series being condensed.

Director Tony Gilroy explained that both he and Luna were overwhelmed by the prospect of extending the show for five seasons.

As Luna famously said, he would “die” if forced to commit to such an extended timeline. Ultimately, the decision was made to complete the story in two seasons, which allowed for a more focused and manageable narrative.

The High Costs of Andor’s Ambition

Reports revealed that Season 1’s budget exceeded $250 million, setting a new record for Star Wars projects on Disney+. Season 2’s budget rose even higher, approaching $291 million, pushing the total cost of both seasons to $645 million.

This massive expenditure raised concerns within Disney, particularly as the show’s demand was significantly lower than other Star Wars hits like The Mandalorian and Obi-Wan Kenobi.

Despite critical acclaim—Andor holds a 96% critics score on Rotten Tomatoes—the series failed to match the viewership numbers needed to justify its massive budget. Disney, seeing a poor return on investment, likely decided that the show’s conclusion after Season 2 was the most fiscally responsible choice.

A Complete Story in Two Seasons

While the financial pressures were evident, both Gilroy and Luna recognized that Andor‘s story could be told effectively within the two-season format.

Season 2 is structured into four blocks of three episodes, each covering one year leading up to the events of Rogue One, bringing the story full circle.

In the end, the decision to cut the series short was a blend of creative limitations and corporate realities. With a record-breaking Season 2 already completed, fans can look forward to an impactful conclusion to the Andor saga, streaming in 2025.
