Star Wars Confirms Real Reason Behind The Acolyte Cancellation

Disney has confirmed the real reason why The Acolyte was cancelled, and it’s not what many people expected.

The Acolyte was one of Disney Plus’ biggest Star Wars shows last year. It told a new story set 100 years before the Star Wars prequel trilogy, focusing on the battle between the Jedi and the Sith.

Even though the show got strong ratings and good reviews from critics, Disney chose not to continue it. Some people online claimed the show was cancelled because it was “woke,” pointing to its diverse cast and female leads. But that wasn’t the truth.

The real reason came from Disney’s own leadership. In an interview with Vulture, Disney Entertainment co-chair Alan Bergman explained the real cause.

“So as it relates to Acolyte, we were happy with our performance,” Bergman said. “But it wasn’t where we needed it to be given the cost structure of that title, quite frankly, to go and make a season two.”

The problem was the budget. The Acolyte cost about $230 million to make, making it one of the most expensive Star Wars shows ever. Originally, it was supposed to have a budget of $180 million, but it went over-budget during production.

For comparison, The Mandalorian cost about $120 million per season, and Skeleton Crew reportedly cost around $136 million. Only Andor had a bigger budget at $250 million.

Because The Acolyte cost so much, Disney decided it wasn’t worth spending more on a second season. That’s why it was cancelled, not because of its story, cast, or themes.

Now, Disney is focusing on other upcoming Star Wars projects, but fans still wonder what could have been if The Acolyte had gotten a second season.
