The PlayStation 6 may still be a few years away, but we’re already starting to see the first hints of major games being developed for the next generation. One of the first big RPGs quietly confirmed for Sony’s upcoming console is Squadron 42, developed by Cloud Imperium Games (CIG)—the team behind Star Citizen.
This news comes from a recent job listing posted by CIG. The studio is hiring Cinematic Animators to work on “next-gen” systems, with a focus on Squadron 42. The listing highlights the need for developers who can create deep, emotional narratives with multiple branching paths and high-quality cinematic performances.
Squadron 42 is set in the Star Citizen universe and will be a single-player, story-driven experience. Interestingly, this is despite past comments from studio leadership downplaying interest in console development. Now, it seems clear that the PlayStation 6 will be one of its target platforms.
The game is expected to feature top-tier visuals, a branching story, and performances from some of Hollywood’s best-known actors. While Star Citizen is still famously unfinished despite massive crowdfunding, Squadron 42 seems to be on track for next-gen consoles.
With development for the PlayStation 6 heating up behind the scenes, Squadron 42 looks like it could be one of the first major RPGs to define the next console generation.
