Squid Game ― The Front Man

Spoilers Ahead for Squid Game Season 2

Hwang In-ho, also known as the Front Man, plays a central role in Squid Game season 2, which premiered on December 26, 2024.

The season continues the story of Seong Gi-hun (Lee Jung-jae), who returns to the deadly games seeking revenge.

Wi Ha-Joon reprises his role as Hwang Jun-ho, In-ho’s brother, while Lee Byung-hun returns as the mysterious Front Man.

Season 2 reveals new details about In-ho’s past, his connection to the games, and his tragic transformation.

In-ho’s Fall From Grace
Before becoming the Front Man, Hwang In-ho was a police officer. His life changed when his wife needed a liver transplant due to cirrhosis.

To cover her medical bills, In-ho accepted bribes. After being caught, he was fired, disgraced, and left in debt.

In a heartbreaking twist, his wife passed away, leaving him with guilt and despair. Season 2 suggests she was pregnant when she died, adding to In-ho’s pain.

Winning the Squid Game
In-ho’s financial troubles led him to join the 28th Squid Game in 2015 as Player 132. He emerged as the winner but chose not to enjoy his prize money. Instead, he became the Front Man after meeting Oh Il-nam, the game’s creator.

Il-nam trusted In-ho to enforce the rules and carry on his legacy. In-ho accepted the role, seeking purpose and authority in his life.

A Twisted Path
In season 2, In-ho disguises himself as Player 001 to manipulate Gi-hun. His actions show he has fully embraced the game’s dark philosophy. He even kills Gi-hun’s ally in the finale, sending a grim message about humanity and guilt.

In-ho’s story contrasts with Gi-hun’s. Both won the game, but their choices afterward highlight their different moral paths.

Family Guilt
In-ho’s brother, Jun-ho, and their mother blame themselves for his tragic life. In-ho once donated his kidney to Jun-ho, preventing him from selling it to help his wife. This act of kindness deepened the family’s guilt after his downfall.

Jun-ho remains determined to save his brother, but the season 2 ending suggests In-ho may be beyond redemption.

What’s Next?
The season ends with In-ho firmly in control, setting up a potential showdown in season 3. His tragic backstory and complex character make him one of Squid Game’s most compelling figures.
