Squid Game creator Hwang Dong-hyuk recently revealed his plans for the future of the series after season 3, which is set to conclude Gi-hun’s (Lee Jung-jae) story.
While season 3 will be the finale for this particular storyline, Hwang has hinted at the possibility of continuing the Squid Game universe through spinoffs.
In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Hwang explained that while season 3 will wrap up the story of Gi-hun, he is open to exploring different characters and story arcs in the future.
One spinoff idea he mentioned was focusing on the masked guards, delving into their backstory and what they do in their downtime.
Squid Game’s Success Puts Pressure on Future
The success of Squid Game has been undeniable. Season 1 became Netflix’s most-watched series, and season 2 has already gained millions of views, further cementing the show’s popularity.
With this massive success, fans are eager to see more, but whether Hwang will be involved in future projects remains uncertain. He has expressed the need for a break after the intense development of season 2.
Spinoffs Already in the Works
There have already been a few spinoffs in different formats, such as Squid Game: The Challenge, a reality competition show, and a multiplayer video game, Squid Game: Unleashed.
Additionally, rumors have surfaced about an American version of the series, with director David Fincher reportedly linked to the project.
Could Season 2 Lead to More Spinoffs?
Season 2 of Squid Game expanded the universe significantly by focusing on characters outside of the main players, such as the guard No-eul and the Front Man.
This broadening of the story could lay the groundwork for potential spinoffs, as Hwang has shown interest in exploring different perspectives within the Squid Game world.
As season 3 approaches, fans are left wondering if Hwang will return to the universe with new characters and stories or if the Squid Game saga will conclude with a definitive end.
