Spotify’s ‘Lossless’ Audio Feature Spotted in App Code, Hinting at Possible Launch

Spotify’s long-promised lossless audio feature might finally be getting closer to reality. New code found in the Spotify desktop and mobile apps shows fresh references to “lossless” music, giving hope to fans who have waited years for this upgrade.

The discovery was made by technologist Chris Messina, who found several help cards in the Spotify app mentioning “Lossless music, now in premium” and “Best sound quality on Spotify for music in up to 24-bit/44.1 kHz.”

Other cards provide guidance on troubleshooting, device compatibility, and notes about songs that might not be available in lossless.

Reddit users also spotted similar updates in the mobile app, with one saying the feature is already present but currently disabled. TechCrunch confirmed this using data from analytics firm Appsensa.

Spotify first announced plans for lossless streaming, called Spotify HiFi, in 2021. But despite several leaks and announcements, the feature has yet to launch. Spotify executives have repeatedly said they are developing more premium features but have never given a launch date.

One positive sign is Spotify’s recent deals with major labels like Warner Music and Universal Music Group. These agreements could help clear the way for the long-awaited high-quality streaming tier.

Spotify has not officially commented on the recent discoveries.
