Spotify Tests New Feature to Fix Repetitive Playlists

Spotify is testing a new feature called “sub-genre chips” to improve music discovery for users. These chips appear inside genre mix playlists and let listeners explore specific sub-genres like Alternative R&B, Neo Soul, Pop R&B, Grunge, Metal, and more.

When users tap on a sub-genre chip, the playlist refreshes with new songs from that sub-genre, instead of just filtering out existing tracks. This helps users find fresh and less repetitive music within their favorite genres.

This new feature was first spotted by a Reddit user who got early access to it. However, not everyone sees the sub-genre chips yet, indicating Spotify is likely rolling it out slowly or testing it with select users.

Spotify holds a strong 34.64% market share in music streaming as of 2024, leading the industry. This move shows Spotify’s effort to address user complaints about repetitive song recommendations and keep the listening experience engaging.

If you’ve tried the new sub-genre chips, Spotify wants to hear your feedback as they continue testing this promising tool for granular and personalized music discovery.
