Spotify and Universal Music Group (UMG) have signed a multi-year agreement that could introduce a new, higher-priced subscription tier for superfans.

The deal aligns with UMG’s “Streaming 2.0” vision, which aims to offer premium features like early access to music, exclusive editions, hi-res audio, and artist Q&As.

UMG CEO Sir Lucian Grainge called the partnership a step toward the company’s goal of creating more value for artists and fans. This “super-premium” subscription concept has been in discussion for months, according to reports.

Royalty Rates and Industry Impact

The deal may also increase royalty rates for artists, according to the National Music Publishers Association (NMPA).

Spotify has faced criticism for lowering mechanical royalty rates for songwriters last year, prompting complaints to the FTC.

This agreement marks Spotify’s first direct deal with a music publisher since 2018, following the passage of the Music Modernization Act.

It’s unclear if other publishers, like Sony Music Publishing, will pursue similar agreements, but the UMG deal could set a precedent.

What’s Next?

Neither Spotify nor UMG disclosed details about the subscription’s pricing or launch date. However, this partnership could reshape the streaming landscape, offering fans exclusive perks at a higher cost.
