Sony is working on the next generation of its popular gaming console, the PlayStation 6, but the new system is not expected to launch soon. Despite several years of development and ongoing collaboration with technology partner AMD, Sony has indicated that the PS6 is still in the early stages.
The PlayStation 5 was released in November 2020 alongside the Xbox Series X/S and has sold over 65 million units since launch. Reports show that the PS5 has performed well, outselling the PS4 by 7% during the same period since release.
Mark Cerny, the lead PlayStation console architect, recently told Tom’s Guide that Sony is focusing on new technology for the PS6, such as improved machine learning algorithms and advanced graphics features.
However, he described the project’s timeline as “multi-year,” making it clear that the PS6 will not arrive in the immediate future. Many fans had hoped for a release as early as 2027, but that now appears unlikely.
While the PS6 remains in development, Sony is rumored to be working on a next-generation handheld device with AI upscaling and advanced memory, although specific details have not been confirmed.
In addition, Sony plans to release an upgraded PS5 Pro in 2026. The new model will feature updates to PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution, aiming for improved visuals similar to AMD’s latest upscaling technology.
As Sony focuses on current products and prepares for future hardware, gamers may need to wait several more years before the PlayStation 6 becomes available.
