The Old Forge Pub, known as the most remote pub in the UK, has cancelled its Harry Potter-themed Halloween party after receiving backlash over the choice of theme.
Located in the village of Inverie on Scotland’s Knoydart peninsula, The Old Forge can only be reached by boat or by hiking several miles. Despite its remote location, the community-owned pub is a popular spot known for its friendly and welcoming atmosphere.
In a statement posted on social media, the pub’s management said the Harry Potter theme had “proven dividing,” leading to some staff receiving “inappropriate grief.” They decided to cancel the dinner party but will still hold a children’s Halloween event in a smaller section of the pub.
“It was always meant to be just a fun night,” the statement said. “Unfortunately, using Harry Potter as a theme has proven dividing, and some of our staff have received inappropriate grief as a result.”
The management added that they support “everyone’s rights,” referencing their participation in the recent Knoydart Pride celebrations. They also shared that a planned charity fundraiser for trans youth was part of the event.
The controversy reflects the growing debate around Harry Potter author J.K. Rowling’s public comments about the transgender community.
Rowling has been criticized for her stance on gender identity, which has led to distance between her and several of the film series’ stars, including Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, and Rupert Grint, all of whom have voiced support for trans rights.
The Old Forge emphasized that the cancellation was not intended to cause division but rather to protect its staff and maintain a respectful community environment.
“We care about everyone in our community,” the pub concluded. “We ask everyone to be kind and respectful to each other and to our staff.”
Despite the cancellation, regular restaurant service and the children’s party will go ahead as planned on Halloween.
