An early-morning incident at Rockstar North’s headquarters in Edinburgh caused concern on Monday, especially with Grand Theft Auto VI set to release later this year. However, officials and industry sources say the game’s development timeline remains unaffected.
Emergency services were called to Holyrood Road in Edinburgh at around 5:02 a.m. on January 19, 2026. Reports initially described an explosion at Barclay House, which houses Rockstar North’s main studio.
According to the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service, the incident was caused by a boiler explosion in the building’s basement or boiler room. Three fire engines and four specialist units responded to the scene to assess and secure the structure.
Firefighters spent several hours checking the safety of the building. Authorities reported structural damage, but confirmed that no one was injured. The building was mostly empty at the time of the incident. The site was handed over to police for further safety checks at around 9:21 a.m.

Despite the damage, sources close to the studio say GTA VI development will not be disrupted. While Rockstar North leads the project, the game is being developed across multiple Rockstar studios worldwide, including teams in New York, Toronto, and India.
Rockstar also uses a hybrid work model and secure cloud-based systems. This means key game data is stored remotely rather than on local office hardware. As a result, the incident is not expected to affect core development work.
Rockstar previously confirmed that Grand Theft Auto VI is scheduled for release on November 19, 2026. Industry analysts believe a delay is unlikely unless the building remains closed for an extended period.
Fans quickly reacted on social media, especially on Reddit and X. Many shared jokes about the incident, while others expressed relief that no one was hurt. A common sentiment online was that GTA VI has faced many challenges, but continues to stay on track.
For now, the focus remains on safety checks and repairs, while GTA VI’s highly anticipated launch continues as planned.
