Rob Jetten has officially become the new Prime Minister of the Netherlands. The 38-year-old took the oath at Huis ten Bosch Palace in The Hague, with King Willem-Alexander installing him and his minority coalition government.
Jetten leads the centrist Democrats 66 (D66) party. He is the youngest person ever to hold the office and the first openly gay leader in Dutch history.
His coalition includes D66, the Christian Democrats, and the People’s Party for Freedom and Democracy (VVD). Together, they hold just 66 of 150 seats in the lower house, meaning Jetten will need to work with opposition parties to pass laws.
D66 pulled off a surprise win in the October 2025 election, narrowly beating Geert Wilders’ far-right Party for Freedom (PVV). Jetten’s victory marks a shift toward a more centrist, pro-EU government.
The new prime minister faces major challenges. He plans to boost defence spending and reduce farming emissions, but his minority government could make progress difficult.
Jetten succeeds Dick Schoof, who led a short-lived administration. Observers see his rise as a new chapter in Dutch politics, with younger leadership and historic representation.
At 38, Rob Jetten is already making headlines for breaking barriers and setting a historic precedent for the Netherlands.
