At CES 2025, Qualcomm made a bold statement about its ambitions in the PC market with the unveiling of its Snapdragon X chip.

Designed for mid-range laptops priced around $600, the chip promises robust performance for on-device AI applications, all while maintaining affordability.

But Qualcomm’s plans don’t stop there, as CEO Cristiano Amon hinted at even more powerful products in the pipeline.

Expanding Qualcomm’s PC Portfolio

During an interview at CES, Amon revealed Qualcomm’s strategy to diversify its offerings across price points, introducing what he referred to as the “Copilot+ PC” portfolio. This suggests a focus on AI-driven computing experiences.

Amon also hinted at Qualcomm’s interest in the high-performance PC graphics market, a move that could position the company as a competitor to Nvidia, the leader in desktop graphics with an 88% market share.

Qualcomm’s Renewed PC Push

Qualcomm’s earlier attempts to enter the PC market with Windows 10 laptops were hindered by app compatibility issues.

However, the new Snapdragon X Elite and X Plus chips have garnered positive reviews for their impressive performance and long-lasting battery life, areas where they outshine AMD and Intel systems.

Key Improvements:

  • Better Compatibility: Collaboration with Microsoft ensures that apps designed for AMD and Intel chips run seamlessly on Qualcomm-powered devices.
  • Exceptional Battery Life: Snapdragon chips offer efficiency unmatched by competitors.
  • Mini Desktop PCs: Qualcomm is also venturing into compact desktop systems, targeting both consumers and enterprise users.

Challenges in Gaming and Graphics

While Qualcomm’s Snapdragon X chips excel in general computing, they fall short in gaming, where dedicated graphics processing power is crucial.

Amon’s remarks suggest Qualcomm may be developing chips with more powerful integrated graphics, though it remains unclear if the company plans to enter the dedicated GPU market.

If Qualcomm does take on Nvidia in the GPU space, it would face a formidable challenge. Nvidia dominates the market, and Qualcomm would need to offer groundbreaking innovations to gain a foothold.

Opportunities Amid Competitor Struggles

Despite the challenges, Qualcomm sees an opportunity to capture market share from Intel and AMD. Intel, which still controls 76% of the PC market, is grappling with internal restructuring and leadership changes, while AMD is focused on expanding its AI and gaming offerings.

Amon emphasized that Qualcomm’s success isn’t reliant on its competitors’ struggles but rather on its own advancements.

“The incredible traction you’re seeing right now is just because we develop a very competitive platform … independent of what our competitors were doing,” Amon stated.

Looking Ahead

With plans to push the boundaries of performance and battery life, Qualcomm’s roadmap signals a long-term commitment to the PC market.

Whether the company can challenge industry giants like Nvidia in the GPU space or disrupt Intel and AMD’s dominance in the CPU market remains to be seen, but Qualcomm’s progress so far suggests it’s a contender worth watching.
