The PlayStation 6 could arrive with a serious problem, and it may not be Sony’s fault.
Like every new console generation, the PS6 is expected to improve visuals, performance, and features over the PlayStation 5. However, many gamers are questioning whether those improvements will feel meaningful enough to justify the cost.
One ongoing concern is the number of first-party exclusives. While the PS5 has strong titles, many fans believe it has fewer standout exclusives than earlier consoles. A report published by Tech4Gamers in April 2025 said the PS5 has five times fewer exclusives than the PS4 and ten times fewer than the PS3.
Sony could address this by releasing more high-quality exclusives on PS6. But there is another challenge that is harder to solve.
The Shrinking Generational Leap
Many players feel that console graphics are already close to their peak. A recent Reddit discussion highlighted how difficult it may be for Sony to deliver a major visual leap over the PS5, especially for owners of the PS5 Pro.
In the past, new PlayStation consoles showed clear jumps in quality:
- PS1 to PS2: GTA 2 to GTA III was a dramatic upgrade.
- PS2 to PS3: GTA: San Andreas to GTA IV showed major improvements.
- PS3 to PS4: Uncharted 3 to Uncharted 4 still felt like a big step forward.
Today, the difference is smaller. Games like Ghost of Tsushima and Red Dead Redemption 2 still compete visually with newer titles. This makes it harder for the PS6 to feel truly “next-gen.”
Price Could Be the Deciding Factor
If the PS6 launches with only modest improvements, convincing players to spend an estimated £550 to £700 may be difficult. Some fans believe that if the leap is small, Sony should reflect that in the price.
Sony could still surprise players with a major breakthrough. But if the PS6 offers only a minor upgrade, it may face resistance from gamers who already feel satisfied with current hardware.
