Rapper Playboi Carti has stirred a heated debate in the hip-hop community after declaring Atlanta as “the home of hip-hop” during a concert.

The 27-year-old made the remark on stage at The Weeknd’s After Hours Til Dawn tour stop in Atlanta on Thursday, August 21. “ATL, the home of hip-hop. Atlanta, the home of hip-hop. I’m standing on that, you know what it is,” Carti told the crowd, in a clip later shared widely on social media.

His comments quickly drew reactions online, with fans divided over the claim. Many pointed out that hip-hop’s historical roots lie in New York City, where the genre emerged in the 1970s. Others argued that while New York is the birthplace, Atlanta has been the dominant force in shaping hip-hop’s sound, culture, and commercial success over the past two decades.

Some users also highlighted Chicago and other cities as contenders, while others defended Atlanta’s influence by citing artists such as Outkast, Future, Young Thug, and JID, who have shaped the modern sound of rap.

Carti, who is currently promoting new music following the release of his album MUSIC earlier this year, is known for making provocative statements that spark discussion. Fans also continue to speculate about his next project, BABY BOI, which he has been teasing on social media.

While the debate over hip-hop’s “true home” is unlikely to be settled, Carti’s comments have once again highlighted Atlanta’s central role in contemporary rap culture.
