Psychologist Explains Ozempic’s Impact on Sex Drive as Users Report Surprising Side Effect

A psychologist has shed light on why some people taking Ozempic may experience changes in their sex drive, as reports of this unexpected side effect continue to grow.

Ozempic, a drug manufactured by Novo Nordisk, is officially approved for treating Type-2 diabetes. However, it has gained widespread popularity as a weight loss medication due to its ability to reduce appetite and control cravings.

The medicine works by regulating blood sugar levels and making people feel fuller for longer. This leads to reduced food intake, which often results in weight loss. Common side effects include nausea, vomiting, constipation, and stomach discomfort.

However, some users have reported less common effects, including changes in libido. On online forums like Reddit, individuals have shared concerns about a sudden loss of sex drive while on the medication.

One user described the change by saying: “The thought of having sex is almost nauseating. I have absolutely no sex drive at all.” They added that this has caused tension in their relationship with their partner.

How Ozempic Affects the Brain’s Reward System

Dr. Rachel Goldman, a psychologist and professor at NYU Grossman School of Medicine, explained that these reactions could be linked to how Ozempic affects the brain.

“GLP-1 medications like Ozempic impact the reward centre in the brain, which reduces cravings for food and sometimes alcohol,” Dr. Goldman told PureWow. “This same mechanism could also explain changes in sex drive.”

Dr. Goldman noted that the effect is not the same for everyone. Some people report a lower libido, while others experience an increase in sexual desire. These changes can sometimes cause imbalances in relationships, especially if one partner’s sex drive changes dramatically.

Manufacturer Responds to Concerns

Novo Nordisk has acknowledged the ongoing reports of side effects. The company stated:
“Patient safety is of the utmost importance. We recommend that patients take these medications for their approved indications and under the supervision of a healthcare professional.”

They also urged anyone experiencing unusual symptoms, including changes in libido, to report them to their healthcare provider and through official channels such as the MHRA Yellow Card scheme.

For now, experts say more research is needed to fully understand how medications like Ozempic may influence sex drive and other personal behaviours.
