OpenAI has announced a new version of ChatGPT called ChatGPT Gov, designed specifically for U.S. government agencies.

This tool will help improve efficiency and productivity by providing access to OpenAI’s powerful AI models.

What is ChatGPT Gov?

ChatGPT Gov is a special version of ChatGPT that government agencies can use. It is built to work with Microsoft’s Azure cloud services, both commercial and government versions.

This setup allows agencies to meet strict security and privacy rules, like cybersecurity standards and government regulations.

The new tool includes many features similar to ChatGPT Enterprise, such as:

  • Saving and sharing conversations within government workspaces
  • Uploading text and image files
  • Using GPT-4o, OpenAI’s advanced model for tasks like summarization, coding, and math
  • Creating custom GPTs for specific government needs
  • Admin tools for managing users and settings

Why is ChatGPT Gov Important?

The U.S. government has already been using AI tools like ChatGPT for various tasks. Since 2024, over 90,000 users from more than 3,500 agencies have sent over 18 million messages using ChatGPT.

These users include:

  • Air Force Research Laboratory, using ChatGPT for coding and administrative tasks
  • Los Alamos National Laboratory, using AI for scientific research
  • Minnesota’s Enterprise Translations Office, improving translation services
  • Pennsylvania’s government, saving time on routine tasks

ChatGPT Gov is designed to make it easier for agencies to use AI while ensuring the data remains secure and follows government rules.

What’s Next for ChatGPT Gov?

OpenAI plans to expand ChatGPT Gov by working toward FedRAMP Moderate and High certifications and exploring options for classified regions. This means more agencies will be able to use the tool in the future.

ChatGPT Gov is part of OpenAI’s effort to support the U.S. government in solving important problems, improving public services, and strengthening national security with AI.
