The live-action anime world is about to get scarier this summer. The popular horror-comedy anime Mieruko-Chan is being adapted into a live-action movie, and its first trailer just dropped. Fans are already buzzing about how the spooky story of Miko Yotsuya will translate to the big screen.

Mieruko-Chan is based on the 2018 manga created by Tomoki Izumi and published by Kadokawa. The story follows Miko, a high school girl who can see terrifying ghosts and spirits around her. Instead of reacting, she pretends not to notice them, hoping they’ll leave her alone. This mix of horror and humor made the anime adaptation a hit when it aired in 2021 with 12 episodes produced by Studio Passione.

Live-Action Cast and Release Details

The live-action Mieruko-Chan movie is set to release in Japan on June 6, 2025. Nanoka Hara will play Miko, with Rinka Kumada as Hana, Naenao as Yuria, and Koki Yamashita as Akio. Interestingly, the film’s narrator is Sora Amamiya, the voice actor who brought Miko to life in the anime.

Although there’s no official announcement yet for a North American release, live-action anime films often find their way to international audiences through streaming services or limited screenings.

The State of Horror in Anime

The success of Mieruko-Chan shows that horror anime remains a strong genre. While Junji Ito adaptations like Uzumaki have left mixed impressions, other projects such as The Summer Hikaru Died and Hell Teacher Nube are keeping the scares alive. Returning classics like Mononoke and Theatre of Darkness: Yamishibai also show that horror anime is thriving.

Mieruko-Chan stands out for blending scares with comedy, making it unique in the world of anime horror. Fans are eager to see if the live-action adaptation can capture the same balance.

With its chilling trailer and talented cast, the Mieruko-Chan live-action movie is shaping up to be one of the most anticipated releases of 2025.
