An Ohio man got incredibly lucky after buying the wrong lottery ticket and still winning $50,000.
Ron went out to buy a Mega Millions ticket but accidentally picked a Pick 5 ticket instead. In Pick 5, you must choose five numbers in the correct order to win, with odds of one in 100,000.
He chose the numbers 3-0-9-5-7—and they matched the draw on February 5. Even though he bought the wrong type of ticket, it turned out to be a very lucky mistake.
After taxes, Ron will take home $36,625. He plans to spoil his grandchildren with some of the winnings and donate a portion to his church. He told reporters it felt like “it was meant to be.”
This isn’t his only stroke of luck this year. Ron has also won several raffles and even got $500 from a Super Bowl promotion, making 2026 a surprisingly lucky year for him.
Experts warn that smaller wins like Ron’s are easier to manage than massive jackpots, which can sometimes cause problems. Large lottery prizes can strain relationships or disappear quickly due to poor financial choices.
For Ron, $50,000 is enough to enjoy some treats and do good, without turning his life upside down. It’s a rare story of luck—winning big despite a simple mistake.
