Officials discovered a surprising item while recovering the remains of OceanGate’s Titan submersible, which tragically imploded nearly two years ago.

In June 2023, the Titan was on a mission to explore the Titanic wreck, located about 12,500 feet below the Atlantic Ocean near Newfoundland, Canada. Just under two hours into the dive, the U.S. Coast Guard lost contact with the submersible.

Authorities later confirmed that the Titan was destroyed by a catastrophic implosion caused by intense water pressure and material failure. All five people onboard died instantly.

The victims included OceanGate CEO Stockton Rush, deep-sea explorer Paul-Henri Nargeolet, British businessman Hamish Harding, and Pakistani-British businessman Shahzada Dawood with his son Suleman.

A new Discovery Channel documentary revealed that officials found a pen belonging to Stockton Rush completely intact among the wreckage. Other items recovered included business cards, Titanic-themed stickers, and clothing. Human remains were also discovered, confirming the loss of all passengers.

Chilling footage released in the documentary captures the sound of the implosion. Wendy Rush, Stockton’s wife, heard a loud bang during the sub’s descent and asked nervously, “What was that bang?” Tragically, that noise was the moment the submersible imploded.

Despite receiving a reassuring message from the submersible shortly after, the documentary explains that the message was delayed. By the time it arrived, the passengers had already lost their lives.

The U.S. Coast Guard launched a major search operation after the Titan failed to resurface. During the search, sonar crews detected banging noises, offering false hope that survivors were still inside.
