New Data Shows Threads May Soon Overtake X on Mobile Platforms

Instagram’s Threads app is catching up to X (formerly Twitter) in daily mobile users, according to new data from analytics firm Similarweb.

In June 2025, Threads had 115.1 million daily active users on mobile platforms, while X remained slightly ahead with 132 million. Threads has grown 127.8% year-over-year, whereas X has seen a 15.2% decline in the same period.

Although Threads is gaining ground on mobile, X still dominates web traffic, with 145.8 million average daily web visits globally, compared to Threads’ 6.9 million. In this area, Threads is only slightly ahead of decentralized platform Bluesky, which saw 5.3 million daily web visits.

In the U.S., Threads had 15.3 million daily mobile users, behind X’s 22.9 million. On the web, Threads drew 985,200 daily visits from U.S. users, while Bluesky surpassed it with 2.4 million, despite having a smaller mobile presence.

Bluesky experienced rapid user growth in the past year, gaining 372.5% in daily users. However, it still trails far behind in overall numbers with 4.1 million daily actives globally and over 37 million registered users.

The rise of Threads is seen as a potential threat to X’s dominance in the social media ad space, especially on mobile. Meta, which owns Threads, currently relies solely on advertising to monetize the platform.

Threads has 350 million monthly active users, according to Meta’s latest earnings, while X, which no longer publishes metrics, was previously estimated by Elon Musk to have 600 million monthly actives.

Analysts say Threads’ continued mobile focus could help it compete more directly with X. Bluesky, on the other hand, may find its long-term success in its open and customizable infrastructure, appealing to users seeking alternatives to centralized platforms.
