The latest Anne of Green Gables anime adaptation has just confirmed its release window and episode count. The new series, titled Anne Shirley, will premiere in April 2025 and will have a total of 24 episodes.
The anime is being produced by Answer Studio, known for their work on The Garden of Words. It is inspired by Lucy Maud Montgomery’s classic novel series, which follows the adventures of Anne Shirley, an imaginative and spirited orphan girl who is mistakenly sent to live with siblings Marilla and Matthew Cuthbert on Prince Edward Island.
The show will feature Honoka Inoue (Edens Zero) as Anne Shirley, Aya Nakamura (One Piece) as Marilla Cuthbert, Yasunoei Matsumoto (Ultraman X) as Matthew Cuthbert, Naoya Miyase (Beyblade X) as Gilbert Blythe, and Yume Miyamoto (Mononogatari) as Diana Barry.
Hiroshi Kawamata (Hal’s Fute) will direct the series, while Kenichi Tsuchiya (The Garden of Words) handles character design. The anime will combine elements from Montgomery’s original novels with storylines from a new manga adaptation by Akane Hoshikubo, which began serialization earlier this month.
This is not the first time Anne Shirley has been adapted into anime. The 1979 Anne of Green Gables series, directed by Studio Ghibli co-founder Isao Takahata, is still cherished by fans. Legendary filmmaker Hayao Miyazaki also worked on the show’s early episodes.
The new adaptation will premiere on NHK Educational in Japan, but there’s no word yet on international streaming platforms. Fans can expect more updates as the release date approaches.
For now, viewers can look forward to revisiting Anne’s heartfelt and humorous journey in this beautifully reimagined anime.
