A new Netflix documentary tells the shocking true story of a cruise ship disaster that trapped 4,000 passengers at sea. The cruise, known as the ‘poop cruise,’ lost power in 2013, turning a vacation into a nightmare.
The Carnival Triumph cruise ship caught fire in its engine room, which destroyed the electrical system.
Without power, the ship had no lights, refrigeration, air conditioning, or working toilets. Raw sewage leaked all over the ship, and passengers stood ankle-deep in urine.
People were forced to use red biohazard bags for their waste. Food supplies ran low, and passengers began to argue and revolt. Many slept on the upper decks to escape the terrible smell inside.
Crew members and passengers describe the situation as a crisis. One staff member said they never expected to have to use a red bag to relieve themselves. Fights broke out as people struggled to cope.
Carnival’s then-CEO apologized for the disaster, saying the company failed to provide a good vacation experience. The Netflix documentary episode about this event will be released on June 24. It is part of a series called Trainwreck that explores strange and dramatic real-life events.
This documentary reveals how quickly a fun cruise can turn into a terrifying ordeal when disaster strikes at sea.
