Netflix Cuts Off Streaming on These Amazon Fire TV Models

Starting June 3, 2025, Netflix will no longer support first-generation Amazon Fire TV devices. This means users with the original Fire TV, Fire TV Stick, and Fire TV Stick with Alexa Voice Remote—all released in 2014—will lose access to Netflix on those devices. Netflix has already begun notifying affected customers by email.

For over ten years, Netflix has been available on many devices, including Amazon’s Fire TV lineup, which is popular among cord-cutters. However, the older Fire TV models have not received software or security updates from Amazon in recent years. Their outdated hardware cannot keep up with modern streaming demands.

Industry experts believe Netflix’s decision is linked to the use of newer streaming technologies, like the AV1 codec, which improves video quality and efficiency. These technologies require more advanced hardware, which first-generation Fire TVs lack. This is especially important for Netflix users on the Premium plan who watch in 4K and HDR.

Users with these old Fire TV devices will need to upgrade to continue watching Netflix. Amazon offers newer models such as the Fire TV Stick 4K and Fire TV Stick 4K Max, which support 4K streaming and the latest technology. Amazon may also provide trade-in discounts to help customers upgrade at a lower cost.

This move reflects a common trend in technology: old devices often cannot support new software features. While only a small number of users are likely affected, it’s a reminder to keep devices up to date for the best streaming experience.

As the deadline nears, affected users should consider upgrading to avoid losing access to Netflix. New Fire TV devices offer better performance and compatibility with Netflix’s expanding content library.
