Netflix has finally unveiled its plans for the highly-anticipated sci-fi series “3 Body Problem,” based on the renowned book trilogy by Cixin Liu. After weeks of speculation and ambiguity, the streaming giant has confirmed that the series will receive two additional seasons, rounding out the adaptation to a three-season run.

“We always wanted to get to the final page of the third book, and it’s really, really thrilling to us that we will get to do just that,” said David Benioff, co-creator and showrunner of the series, during a panel at the Netflix FYSEE event.

The first season, which debuted earlier this year, garnered a positive response from viewers and critics alike, paving the way for the continuation of the ambitious project. However, the path to renewal was shrouded in uncertainty, with Netflix initially announcing “additional episodes” without explicitly mentioning a second season.

“We included a lot of what we loved from the [novels] in Season 1, but the vast majority of reasons we wanted to make this show are in Season 2,” added D.B. Weiss, Benioff’s co-creator and showrunner.

The decision to greenlight two additional seasons represents a significant financial commitment from Netflix. With a reported budget of $20 million per episode, the streaming service has already invested $160 million in the first season alone. The renewal for seasons 2 and 3 could potentially bring the total cost to a staggering $480 million, nearly half a billion dollars.

While the viewership figures for “3 Body Problem” have not been exceptional, the decision to proceed with the adaptation aligns with Netflix’s strategy of completing ambitious, high-profile projects to avoid leaving series unfinished in their content graveyard.

Furthermore, the show serves as the inaugural project from Netflix’s lucrative overall deal with Benioff and Weiss, the acclaimed showrunners behind the hit series “Game of Thrones.” Canceling “3 Body Problem” could have jeopardized this valuable relationship.

As viewers eagerly await the continuation of the mind-bending sci-fi saga, Netflix’s commitment to the “3 Body Problem” trilogy underscores the streaming service’s ambition to deliver compelling, high-quality content, regardless of the financial investment required.
