Microsoft Faces Broad U.S. Antitrust Investigation Over Cloud and AI Practices

The U.S. Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has launched a comprehensive antitrust investigation into Microsoft, focusing on its software licensing, cloud computing practices, and AI products.

The probe, approved by FTC Chair Lina Khan, is set to investigate Microsoft’s dominance, particularly in its Azure cloud service, where competitors allege that the company is locking customers into its ecosystem with restrictive licensing policies.

Key Points of the Investigation

The FTC is scrutinizing how Microsoft’s licensing practices may hinder customers from moving their data to competing platforms. One significant complaint involves Azure, with competitors accusing Microsoft of charging excessive fees for customers wishing to run Windows Server on rival cloud services and delaying security updates for non-Microsoft platforms.

The investigation also extends to Microsoft’s role in the AI market, particularly its integration of AI tools into Office and Outlook, which has raised concerns among competitors like Google and Amazon.

The Role of Microsoft’s Competitors

Groups such as NetChoice, which represents companies like Amazon and Google, have criticized Microsoft’s licensing practices, calling them detrimental to competition. Google recently filed a complaint with the European Commission, alleging that Microsoft’s pricing and security policies have harmed competition in the cloud computing market.

Potential Implications for Microsoft

While Microsoft has yet to comment on the investigation, it faces growing scrutiny, similar to other Big Tech companies that have been accused of anti-competitive behavior, including Meta, Apple, and Amazon.

With Donald Trump expected to return to the White House, the future of the investigation remains uncertain, as his administration previously displayed leniency towards large tech companies.

The outcome of this probe could impact Microsoft’s future growth and influence in the cloud and AI markets, reshaping the competitive landscape for years to come.
