A former Michigan teacher faces serious criminal charges after having a sexual relationship with a 16-year-old student and telling a coworker about it.
Jocelyn Sanroman, 26, of Pontiac, worked as a teacher at Oakside Prep Academy in Waterford Township. Police say she had sex with a male student in 2023 while she was his teacher.
Sanroman made a critical mistake when she told another teacher about the relationship. That coworker reported the information to police, leading to her arrest.
Criminal Charges Filed
Prosecutors charged Sanroman with three counts of third-degree criminal sexual conduct. Each charge carries up to 15 years in prison if she is convicted.
The charges stem from Michigan law that makes it illegal for school employees to have sexual relationships with students aged 16 or 17. The law treats these cases as criminal sexual conduct even if the student consents. This is because teachers hold positions of authority over students.
Breach of Trust
Prosecutors said Sanroman abused her position of power over a minor. They called it a serious breach of the trust that communities place in their educators.
“This represents a fundamental violation of the responsibility teachers have to protect and educate their students,” prosecutors stated.
