Mercedes has confirmed a multi-year contract extension for British driver George Russell, securing his place with the team beyond the 2026 Formula 1 season. The deal ensures Russell will lead the Silver Arrows alongside Kimi Antonelli, a 19-year-old Italian rising star from Mercedes’ junior program.
The announcement, made on October 15, comes just days before the United States Grand Prix in Austin and follows Russell’s victory at the Singapore Grand Prix, which lifted Mercedes to the top of the constructors’ standings for the first time in several years.
Team principal Toto Wolff praised Russell’s growth and leadership, saying, “George has shown remarkable maturity. This extension is about continuity and building momentum as we head into 2026.”
Russell Focused on Championships
Russell, 27, joined Mercedes from Williams in 2022. He described the new deal as a natural next step in his career, emphasizing his dedication to the team.
“My goal is to continue with Mercedes indefinitely,” he said. “If every seat was open next year, I still believe Mercedes gives me the best chance to win a championship.”
Reports suggest the new contract is worth around £30 million per season, placing Russell among the top three highest-paid drivers in Formula 1, behind Max Verstappen and Lewis Hamilton.
End of Rumors and New Era Ahead
The new deal ends speculation that Mercedes might pursue Verstappen amid uncertainty at Red Bull. Fans celebrated the extension across social media, with many calling it a sign of renewed confidence in Mercedes’ long-term vision.
Some analysts, however, noted that Mercedes’ statement avoided mentioning the exact duration of the contract, sparking questions about possible opt-out clauses. Former F1 driver Damon Hill reacted humorously, posting, “About time, Toto!”
Looking to 2026 and Beyond
Russell’s new teammate, Kimi Antonelli, has been one of the standout performers in Formula 2 this season, earning multiple podium finishes. The combination of Russell’s experience and Antonelli’s potential could be key to Mercedes’ comeback as the sport prepares for major engine and chassis regulation changes in 2026.
“I am prepared for what is to come,” Russell said. “I’m ready to be champion.”
With Mercedes aiming to reclaim its dominance, the Russell–Antonelli partnership marks the beginning of a new chapter for the Brackley-based team—and possibly the start of its next championship push.
