Max Verstappen’s Austin GP Wins Keep F1 Championship Hopes Alive

Max Verstappen has become a strong contender for his fifth Formula 1 World Drivers’ Championship after two dominant wins in Austin. The Red Bull driver has closed the gap to the championship leaders by 64 points in just four races, an unusual achievement in F1 history.

Verstappen now trails Lando Norris by 26 points and Oscar Piastri by 40 points. If he wins all remaining five feature races and two sprint events, he could pass Norris, but Piastri would still need to lose points for Verstappen to win the title. Piastri has not reached the podium in his last three races.

Red Bull’s improved performance comes after internal changes following Christian Horner’s departure. Under new engineering leadership from Laurent Mecking, the team began running engines at full capacity on Fridays, starting from Monza. Verstappen has praised Mecking, citing their technical collaboration as key to his recent success.

McLaren faced difficulties in Austin, with both cars failing to score in the sprint race. Despite the setbacks, the team remains in the championship fight, though Verstappen’s momentum poses a growing challenge.

The Austin Grand Prix weekend included high-profile guests such as Adele, Matthew McConaughey, Joe Rogan, and Bahrain’s Crown Prince. Fans enjoyed western-themed events, driver outfits, podium celebrations, and even a new roller coaster at the circuit.

The Austin Grand Prix is confirmed on the F1 calendar until 2035. Apple has secured U.S. broadcast rights from 2026, replacing ESPN, reportedly paying $150 million for the deal.

Verstappen’s recent form has excited F1 fans. No driver has previously come from so far behind to win the championship, making the remaining races highly anticipated.
