Red Bull driver Max Verstappen has set a new record for the fastest Formula 1 race ever, winning the Italian Grand Prix at Monza in 1 hour, 13 minutes, and 23 seconds. Verstappen finished nearly 20 seconds ahead of McLaren drivers Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri.
The previous record was held by Ferrari legend Michael Schumacher, who won the 2003 Italian Grand Prix in 1 hour, 14 minutes, and 19.838 seconds, with an average speed of 153.8 mph. Verstappen’s dominant pace allowed him to surpass the seven-time world champion’s long-standing record.
“It was a great day for us. Lap 1 was a bit unlucky but after that we were flying,” Verstappen said after the race. “The car was really enjoyable. I could manage the pace quite well throughout that first stint and we pitted at the right time. Fantastic execution by everyone in the whole team. This was an unbelievable weekend.”
This victory marked Verstappen’s third win of the 2025 season and his third career win at Monza. Earlier in the weekend, he also broke the all-time F1 pole position record, setting a lap of 1m18.792s with an average speed of 164.466 mph, surpassing Lewis Hamilton’s 2020 record.
Verstappen’s performance at Monza underlines his ongoing dominance in Formula 1 and his ability to set new milestones, even during a challenging season.
