A man inherited £450,000 ($600,000) from his grandfather and used it to buy a rural cottage. He now faces tension with his girlfriend over sharing monthly expenses.
The 34-year-old man told Reddit that he and his 29-year-old girlfriend found a cottage with a half-converted barn. He plans to rent the annex once it is completed, which would generate income to offset costs.
He calculated that monthly bills—including utilities, council tax, insurance, food, and pets—would total about £1,200 ($1,600). He expects his girlfriend to contribute half, around £600 ($820), once she is financially stable.
“I don’t expect her to cover maintenance or upgrades. I’ll handle all of that,” he wrote. He currently covers all household costs while she looks for a stable job.
His girlfriend, however, said the contribution is unfair because she may only earn minimum wage and comes from a limited financial background. The couple has been together for five years and is attending couples therapy.
The man emphasized that the arrangement aims to balance lifestyle and responsibility, allowing both to enjoy the property without overworking. He also noted that rental income from the annex could reduce her share.
He clarified that the house will remain in his name but hopes she can build savings from her contributions and rental income. “I’ve promised she would always have a place to stay and food even if we broke up,” he added.
