Like Dragon Ball, Black Clover’s Story Is Evolving Beyond Its Plans

Black Clover’s final arc is underway, but creator Yūki Tabata admits he still doesn’t have a clear plan for how it will conclude.

This approach, while surprising, echoes Akira Toriyama’s famously unstructured storytelling in Dragon Ball, which ultimately helped shape one of the most iconic franchises in anime history.

An Unscripted Future for Black Clover

Tabata revealed at a 2024 manga convention that while he has certain narrative elements in mind, there’s no concrete roadmap for the series’ ending.

Given that Black Clover is now 10 years old, fans might have expected a well-planned conclusion. Instead, its final arc remains an open canvas.

While some may find this worrying, history suggests that improvisation can work. Toriyama frequently changed Dragon Ball’s direction due to fan reception, editorial influence, and personal whims.

Major arcs, including the transition from Dragon Ball to Dragon Ball Z and the continued focus on Goku, were largely unplanned but became legendary.

Why an Unplanned Ending Could Be Beneficial

With no anime currently influencing the manga’s pacing, Tabata has complete creative freedom.

This flexibility allows characters and plotlines to develop organically rather than being rushed toward a predetermined endpoint.

If history repeats itself, Black Clover’s unexpected twists could turn it into a long-lasting shonen staple, much like Dragon Ball.

Fans can only wait to see where Tabata’s spontaneous storytelling takes Asta and the world of magic.
