Meta has recently come under fire after announcing another round of layoffs, this time in the name of performance-based cuts.
The tech giant, which owns Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp, laid off approximately 3,600 employees, or 5% of its workforce.
But many of those impacted by the move have taken to public forums, expressing anger and disbelief.
Performance-Based Cuts or Callous Decisions?
While CEO Mark Zuckerberg stated that the layoffs were a result of low performance, some employees claim that their performance records were stellar, with no history of underperformance. Many laid-off workers expressed frustration, feeling unfairly labeled as “low performers.”
“It feels like we have the scarlet letter on our backs,” one anonymous employee said, referring to the stigma attached to the label of “low performer.”
Allegations of Unfair Layoffs During Leave
A significant portion of the backlash has focused on the timing of the layoffs. Several employees claimed they were let go while on approved leave, including parental and medical leave.
One employee stated that despite having “exceeded expectations” for multiple years and having recently had a baby, they were laid off.
Another, who was on maternity leave for six months, voiced their frustration, stating they were fired without any history of poor performance.
Tech Industry Culture Shift
The anger over Meta’s layoffs is part of a broader cultural shift taking place across Silicon Valley. Many employees have expressed concerns about increased job insecurity, reduced flexibility, and a change in leadership priorities.
Zuckerberg’s statements about a company needing more “masculine energy” have fueled further speculation about the evolving direction of Meta’s workplace culture.
For many, the layoffs feel like retaliation against workers who benefited from the job offers and pay hikes during the tech boom in 2021-2022.
Some workers believe that the current leadership at Meta is trying to reassert control by instilling fear in employees, shifting the company’s focus away from employees’ well-being.
Meta Faces Growing Discontent
The discontent among Meta employees reflects the increasing tension in the tech world. With many companies imposing Return to Office (RTO) mandates and cutting back on diversity initiatives, employees are finding themselves facing a changing work environment where job stability is no longer guaranteed.
For some, this growing uncertainty is making them question the future of their careers in tech. “Zuck doesn’t care about his employees,” one former Meta worker remarked. “Only the company.”
