Netflix has not officially confirmed a sequel to KPop Demon Hunters, but signs point strongly to a second film. The animated movie is on track to become Netflix’s most-watched release ever, while also performing well at the box office during its special theatrical run. Its soundtrack has also broken multiple music records.
Director Maggie Kang has revealed that she already has a plan for the story of a potential sequel. Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, Kang said the next film would partly explore the origins of the KPop band turned demon hunters.
“We were trying to do a non-origin origin story with a concept that’s brand new to people,” Kang explained. “What is it about these girls that brought them into HUNTR/X and made them demon hunters? What is each of their backstory? How did they get chosen? What is that journey like?”
Kang said these details could not fit into the first film but could be explored later through flashbacks or new storylines.
Actress Arden Cho, who voices Rumi, also expressed her hopes for the sequel. Speaking to Variety, Cho said she would like to see Rumi try to rescue Jinu, whose fate was left uncertain. “It is a magical world, right? Anything is possible,” she said.
So far, little is known about the other main characters, Mira and Zoey, beyond their personalities. A sequel could provide more depth to their backstories while continuing the larger fight against demonic forces.
While discussions are still ongoing, reports suggest that Sony—the original producer before selling rights to Netflix—is in talks about future projects. Possibilities include a trilogy, a live-action remake, or even a stage show. For now, the most likely next step is an animated sequel.
