Keira Knightley has come under scrutiny after a video of her answering a question about the boycott of JK Rowling was shared online, with fans describing her reaction as “so much worse” than initially thought.

Knightley, cast as Dolores Umbridge in the upcoming Harry Potter audiobook, was asked about the ongoing boycott during an interview for her Netflix film The Woman in Cabin 10. The boycott is linked to Rowling’s controversial stance on transgender rights, including her misgendering of activist India Willoughby and support for gender-critical figures such as Graham Linehan and Posie Parker.

In the interview, Knightley said: “I was not aware of that, no. I’m very sorry. You know, I think we’re all living in a period of time right now where we’re all going to have to figure out how to live together, aren’t we? We’ve all got very different opinions. I hope that we can all find respect.”

After the video circulated online, fans criticized Knightley’s response as awkward and possibly sarcastic, with some highlighting that she laughed after saying she was “very sorry.” On Reddit, one user called it a “bizarre reaction,” while another suggested she appeared “mad to have even been asked the question.”

The backlash underscores the challenges actors face when working with Rowling despite her controversial views. Knightley’s reaction has been compared to other actors in the franchise, including Emma Watson, who faced criticism from Rowling after expressing a more conciliatory stance in a podcast.

Nick Frost, set to play Hagrid in the upcoming HBO reboot of the series, commented on similar criticism, saying he disagreed with Rowling’s views but chose to turn off social media comments. “She’s allowed her opinion, and I’m allowed mine, they just don’t align in any way, shape or form,” Frost said, adding that the public should see the situation as an opportunity to educate themselves.

Knightley’s casting and response have reignited debate among fans over whether actors can remain neutral when involved with projects connected to controversial figures.
