Adam Sandler’s new movie, Happy Gilmore 2, has become the biggest Netflix film debut in the US. It broke the record previously held by the Korean animated film K-Pop Demon Hunters.
Happy Gilmore 2 came out nearly 30 years after the original. In this sequel, Sandler plays Happy, a former hockey player turned golfer, who returns to golf to pay for his daughter’s ballet school.
The movie includes many familiar faces from the first film, like Christopher McDonald and Julie Bowen, and stars guests such as Bad Bunny and Eminem.
The film got 46.7 million views in its first three days and reached No. 1 in 47 countries, including Argentina, Brazil, and Peru. It also ranked in the top 10 in parts of Asia like Hong Kong and Thailand.
The original Happy Gilmore also became popular again, ranking No. 3 worldwide with 11.4 million views. Critics gave Happy Gilmore 2 a score of 62 on Rotten Tomatoes, close to the original’s 63, and praised it as a fun and nostalgic film.
Meanwhile, K-Pop Demon Hunters now holds the record for the most-watched Netflix animated film ever, with 26.3 million views in its sixth week.
