Johnny Depp made a secret gesture to Eric Dane in the months before the actor passed away, a source has revealed.
Eric Dane, known for his roles in Euphoria and Grey’s Anatomy, died on Thursday at the age of 53. He had been diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) in 2024.
Dane’s family shared a statement saying he spent his final days surrounded by close friends, his wife Rebecca Gayheart, and their two daughters, Billie and Georgia. They praised his efforts to raise awareness for ALS and thanked fans for their support.
Though he never worked with Depp on screen, the two became close through mutual friends. Depp reportedly helped Dane in his final months, particularly with financial support as his health declined.

A source told Page Six that Depp offered Dane a home above the Sunset Strip, “basically rent-free.” He allowed Dane to pay what he could or nothing at all, easing one major stress during his illness.
Dane, who also appeared in Saved by the Bell, had been married to Gayheart since 2004. Despite losing function in his right arm, he was set to appear in the upcoming third season of Euphoria, with his character shown in a wheelchair.
In interviews last year, Dane described how his ALS diagnosis made him angry, fearing he might be taken from his daughters while they were still young.
Depp’s private gesture highlighted the actor’s kindness during a difficult time for his friend. Fans continue to honor Dane’s life and career.
