James Blunt has revealed that his famous love ballad ‘You’re Beautiful’ is actually about drug use and stalking—not romance.

The British singer shared the shocking truth in a video celebrating the 20th anniversary of the song’s release.

Blunt said the lyrics, long believed to be about falling in love at first sight, were inspired by seeing an ex-girlfriend on the London Underground while he was high on drugs.

“It’s about a guy who’s high and stalking someone else’s girlfriend on the subway,” Blunt explained. “It’s not romantic—it’s a bit creepy.”

The 2005 hit was Blunt’s breakout single from his Back to Bedlam album. It sold over four million copies and topped charts worldwide, earning him fame and fortune—including a home in Ibiza.

Despite the song’s dark origins, it became a favorite for weddings and romantic playlists. But Blunt says that’s a mistake.

“People who choose this song for their wedding are messed up,” he told the Huffington Post. “He should be locked up. It’s not a romantic song.”

Blunt admitted he’s still surprised by how widely the song connected with people, saying:

“Who would have thought a song about being high and stalking someone’s girlfriend would resonate so much?”
