Apple’s entry-level iPhone, the iPhone SE, is set for a major overhaul in 2025, with several exciting upgrades expected.
According to reports from Bloomberg, MacRumors, and analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, the iPhone SE 4 could bring the design and features of Apple’s flagship phones to a more affordable price point.
Here’s what we know so far about the next budget iPhone, iPhone SE 4.
Potential Launch Date: Early 2025
The iPhone SE 4 is rumored to launch in early 2025, possibly in the first quarter, aligning with the release schedule of previous iPhone SE models.
Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman and Kuo both suggest that mass production could begin by December 2024, indicating an imminent launch. However, Apple has yet to confirm any details.
Design: iPhone 14-Inspired Look
The iPhone SE 4 is expected to adopt the design of the iPhone 14, including a larger 6.1-inch OLED display. Unlike the current iPhone SE, which retains the iPhone 8’s design with a 4.7-inch screen, the SE 4 will feature a more modern look with thinner bezels and a larger display.
The switch to an OLED screen will also improve color contrast and black levels, bringing it in line with the rest of Apple’s lineup.
Processor: A New Chip for Better Performance
The iPhone SE 4 is likely to feature Apple’s latest processor, similar to how previous models have used the chip from the latest iPhone.
This upgrade is crucial for enabling Apple’s new AI-powered features, such as the ability to rewrite and summarize text, and improvements to Siri. Additionally, the device may include an Apple-made 5G modem, ensuring faster network speeds.
Larger Battery and Improved Battery Life
With the larger screen and newer chip, the iPhone SE 4 is expected to come with a bigger battery. Reports suggest that the battery could be similar to that of the iPhone 14, which offers up to five more hours of video playback compared to the iPhone SE 3. This would result in significant improvements in battery life for the budget device.
Goodbye Touch ID, Hello Face ID
The iPhone SE 4 may ditch the Touch ID fingerprint sensor in favor of Face ID, following the trend of Apple’s modern iPhones.
While earlier reports hinted at a design with a smaller notch and no Face ID, newer leaks suggest that Face ID will make its way to the SE model.
USB-C and Action Button
The iPhone SE 4 is expected to switch to USB-C, aligning with Apple’s move in the iPhone 15 lineup. Additionally, the device may feature the new Action button, currently found on the iPhone 16 series, allowing users to program shortcuts.
Camera: 48MP Single Lens
The iPhone SE 4 may come with a 48MP main camera, similar to the iPhone 15 and 16. However, it will likely retain a single rear camera, unlike the more expensive iPhones that feature multiple lenses.
Despite this, the device may incorporate the Fusion camera system, which enables 2x optical zoom without a dedicated telephoto lens.
A Modern, Affordable iPhone
If the rumors are true, the iPhone SE 4 could offer significant upgrades over its predecessor, bringing it in line with Apple’s flagship models while maintaining its affordable price tag.
This makes it an attractive option for those seeking a modern iPhone without the premium price.
