Apple has announced iPadOS 26, calling it the biggest update ever for the iPad. The new software brings a fresh design, a powerful windowing system, smarter AI features, and major improvements for working with files, audio, and video.
New Design and Windowing System
iPadOS 26 features a new look with Liquid Glass, making the iPad more expressive and personal. The update introduces a new windowing system that lets users resize, move, and organize app windows more easily. Users can see all open windows at once and switch between them quickly. The new menu bar helps users find commands and tips in any app.
Smarter with Apple Intelligence
Apple Intelligence is now more integrated into iPadOS 26. It powers features like Live Translation for calls and messages, smarter shortcuts, and creative tools for making Genmoji and images. Users can create shortcuts that summarize text, compare notes, or generate images with AI.
Better File and App Management
The Files app now has a better list view, more folder options, and lets users drag folders to the Dock. The new Preview app allows users to view, edit, and mark up PDFs and images with Apple Pencil. Users can also set default apps for opening files.
Audio, Video, and Creative Tools
iPadOS 26 adds new audio controls, better recording with Voice Isolation, and high-quality local capture for video calls. The update also brings Journal to iPad, a new Apple Games app, and more ways to personalize Messages with backgrounds and polls.
Availability
iPadOS 26 is available now for developers, with a public beta next month. The official release will be free for supported iPad models this fall. Some features, like Apple Intelligence, require newer devices.
