iPad Mini May Finally Get This Hardware Upgrade in 2026

Apple is reportedly working on a significant display upgrade for its next-generation iPad mini, shifting from IPS LCD to OLED technology.

According to recent reports, Apple is currently testing Samsung-made OLED panels, which could bring better contrast, deeper blacks, and improved power efficiency to the smallest iPad model.

Expected Launch and Features

The upgraded iPad mini is rumored to launch in 2026, following its predecessor, which arrived in October 2024.

Previous rumors suggested that the 2024 iPad mini might feature an OLED display, but those plans were seemingly delayed until the next iteration.

Apple’s investment in the iPad mini suggests the model is performing well in sales. Additionally, reports indicate that the iPad Air may also receive an OLED upgrade in 2026, meaning most iPads—except the entry-level version—could transition to OLED screens.

OLED Display Expectations

The iPad mini’s OLED panel is likely to be LTPS (Low-Temperature Polysilicon) rather than LTPO (Low-Temperature Polycrystalline Oxide), which means it may not support variable refresh rates like the Pro models.

It is also expected to be a single-stack OLED instead of a Tandem OLED, meaning its brightness levels will be decent but not industry-leading. Apple will likely reserve ProMotion high refresh rates for its premium iPads to maintain clear product differentiation.

What This Means for Apple’s iPad Lineup

With both the iPad mini and iPad Air expected to adopt OLED displays, Apple is gradually shifting its entire iPad lineup to OLED technology, enhancing display quality across the board. However, the entry-level iPad is likely to retain its LCD panel to keep its price affordable.

While a high refresh rate is unlikely for the iPad mini, an OLED screen alone would be a major step up, improving color accuracy, battery efficiency, and overall visual experience.

If these rumors hold true, 2026 could be a big year for iPad displays, offering a significant upgrade to Apple’s tablet lineup.
