How Long Should Masturbation Take? Doctors Outline What’s Normal and What’s Not

There may not be a rulebook for masturbation, but health experts say there are healthy limits to how long a session should last and when it can become excessive.

According to data from health platform Jellytime, men typically take between 10 and 15 minutes during masturbation, while MindBodyGreen reports that women usually take between 15 and 20 minutes. These figures are considered general guidelines rather than strict rules.

However, doctors warn that taking too long can have physical and mental consequences. Lloyds Pharmacy Online Doctor notes that extended sessions can lead to soreness, irritation, or even minor skin infections due to prolonged friction.

Although these physical risks are rare, experts say excessive masturbation can also have psychological effects such as difficulty concentrating, anxiety, depression, and reduced motivation.

Some men have reported that excessive solo activity interfered with their relationships or ability to perform sexually with partners. For women, research on the effects of excessive masturbation remains limited.

The concern around duration has also increased with the rise of a trend called “gooning” — prolonged masturbation sessions where individuals intentionally delay climax to extend pleasure. Experts warn that this practice, when done excessively, can harm both physical health and mental well-being.

Health professionals emphasize that masturbation is a normal and healthy activity, but it should not disrupt daily life or cause discomfort. If someone experiences pain, fatigue, or emotional distress related to the behavior, they are encouraged to seek medical advice.

In short, experts agree there’s no fixed “right” time — a session only becomes too long when it starts affecting one’s body, mood, or daily routine.
