Helmut Marko Hints at “Game-Changing” Red Bull Update as Verstappen Closes In

Fresh off Max Verstappen’s dominant win at the 2025 United States Grand Prix, Red Bull’s motorsport advisor Helmut Marko has teased what could be the defining twist of the season—a secret performance upgrade aimed at powering the team through the final five races.

Verstappen’s victory at the Circuit of the Americas on October 20 cut McLaren driver Oscar Piastri’s championship lead to 40 points. It was the Dutchman’s fourth win in six races, signaling a full-blown resurgence for Red Bull after a slow start to the season. The team has steadily refined its RB21, adapting it to perform across every type of circuit, from high-speed Monza to the tight corners of Austin.

Marko dropped the upgrade hint during a post-race debrief, his trademark grin giving away just enough to stir speculation. “We’ve got something special cooking for the next few races,” he said. “It’s not a small adjustment—it’ll make us even more competitive across all tracks. What you’ve seen so far is only the beginning.”

No specifics were revealed, but rumors suggest aerodynamic and power unit refinements are coming—possibly tailored to the cooler conditions of Mexico and Brazil.

Verstappen, confident as ever, made it clear he’s far from done chasing the title. “The car felt perfect today,” he said. “We’re closing in, and 40 points is absolutely within reach. We’re not backing down.” His teammate Sergio Perez finished fifth, keeping Red Bull within 22 points of McLaren in the constructors’ standings.

Meanwhile, McLaren’s grip on the season is weakening. The team stopped development on the MCL40 to focus resources on the major 2026 regulation changes, which include active aerodynamics and sustainable fuel systems. The decision, once seen as strategic foresight, now risks handing Red Bull the upper hand.

Piastri, calm under pressure, dismissed talk of panic. “We’ve had some tough weekends, but we’re still strong,” he said. “Stopping development was for the future—2026 is the big goal. Max is quick, but this isn’t over.” Lando Norris, recovering from a minor wrist injury in practice, promised to return in Mexico. “This fire’s not out,” he told reporters.

With the next race set for Mexico City on October 26–28, all eyes are on Red Bull’s next move. The team’s history of late-season breakthroughs—like their 2021 championship turnaround—has everyone guessing whether this latest “secret upgrade” could flip the title race again.

One thing’s certain: with 140 points still to fight for, Formula 1’s 2025 championship is far from settled. The season’s final act could be Red Bull’s biggest gamble yet.
