Grand Theft Hamlet follows two out-of-work actors, Sam Crane, and Mark Oosterveen, as they stage Shakespeare’s Hamlet in Grand Theft Auto Online during the 2021 lockdown.

The documentary is filmed within GTA V, using the game’s world to tell a story of creativity, isolation, and resilience.

The documentary, filmed using machinima, premiered at SXSW 2024, winning the Jury Award for Best Documentary. It received praise from critics, with a 92% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and a Metacritic score of 79.

It explores how traditional art forms like Shakespeare can be reimagined in digital spaces, offering fresh perspectives on both theater and gaming culture.
